FAQs about Jacksonville Eye Doctor, Eye Care For You

Contact Lenses

How young can someone be to get contact lenses?

We can fit girls as young as six and boys as young as eight that are in good health. Even if children can not routinely keep up with their rooms or their glasses they can become successful contact lens patients with proper instruction and care stressed by the eye care team and parents. Many children who have eye problems such as cataracts or other complications can be successfully fit with the new contact lenses that are on the market.

How can the wearing of oxygen permeable(OP) contact lenses slow down the progression of nearsightedness?

There have been studies at colleges of optometry that clearly show that if properly fitted OP lenses can slow nearsighted correction down around 30% as compared to spectacle lens wear. This % could even be higher in comparison to extended wear of soft contact lenses. OP lenses slow down the steepening affect of the central cornea that can occur during grade school and above due to prolonged accommodation (focusing), that occurs with reading and other forms of close work. This prolonged focusing tends to flatten the peripheral cornea. Combine that with a shortened working distance with youngsters and parents that are nearsighted than you have all the ingredients for a particular child to develop progressive myopia that can become visually handicapping.

I've been told that I could never wear contact lenses because I have astigmatism. Is this true today?

In the past, accuracy and precision were a problem in the manufacturing of toric, soft contact lenses. Advances in technology have corrected these issues, and today there are several types of affordable contact lenses available for people who have astigmatism - including frequent replacement contact lenses.

Astigmatism means the front of the eye or the inside of the eye is not perfectly round like a basketball but shaped more like a football -- therefore, when light enters your eyes it comes to a focus in two separate areas instead of only one.

To correct astigmatism you need to correct vision with a contact containing two curves, or a firm oxygen permeable lens to mask or hide astigmatism. Firmer lenses normally provide better acuity and are recommended in children as a form of myopia control as well as dry-eyed or heavily allergic people.

Could the use of glasses do more harm than good with my continued use of them or make me dependent on them?

Well, we all normally want the best form of visual correction in front of us if it’s for work, school, driving, recreation or home use.  We can become “dependent” on the clarity a good pair of glasses might give us but it also depends on the age & health of the person, are they going through puberty and how much screen time they give their eyes every day.  We can become dependent on the level of clarity and crispness we get with glasses but if they are possibly used for the wrong activity like using driving glasses on the computer they could accelerate nearsightedness.  Glasses do not prevent corneal terrain (topography) changes from occurring especially during growth and prolonged focus on screens.

What is Orthokeratology, OrthoK, CRT (Corneal Refractive Therapy)?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) has been around for over 30 years. It reduces or eliminates nearsightedness temporarily and makes one less dependent on glasses or contacts for activities, sports, and hobbies.

CRT stands for Corneal Refractive Therapy (a.k.a. Orthokeratology.) It's a non-surgical vision improvement therapy program which uses a special type of contact lens (appliance) that flattens the front surface of your eye over time and makes you less nearsighted. The eventual goal of CRT is to allow you to have functional vision throughout your waking hours. In order to maintain the results, you will need to maintain nightwear of the appliances. Without getting too technical, you insert the appliance at bedtime, remove it when you wake and within days to weeks you should notice an improvement in your vision without the use of daytime contacts or glasses. It's painless!

Contact our office, 904-683-8444 with any further questions and to schedule your free CRT consultation to see if you are a good candidate.

See what our happy customers are saying about Dr. Allan Tirado and Eye Care for You.

"As an elite professional in the medical field of Optical Health, Dr. Tirado has been my trusted Optical Doctor for the past 20+ years. In 1996, during a routine examination, he found a detached retina in my right eye that I wasn't even aware of. He immediately jumped into action and conferred with Dr. Raul Moreno of the Florida Retina Institute where further evaluation determined that I required immediate surgery in order to save the vision in my right eye.

Fortunately for me, Dr. Tirado's knowledge, wisdom and thoroughness saved my eyesight and his continued examinations also revealed that I have lattices in both eyes due to extreme nearsightedness and astigmatism which makes me susceptible to detached retinas. Years later he discovered cataracts which began to develop caused by steroids administered during Chemotherapy. Another condition which he diagnosed was Ocular Hypertension in both eyes which is an ancillary result of Cardiovascular Disease. Ocular Hypertension, if left untreated, causes blindness and is one of the number one causes of Macular Degeneration and loss of eyesight today, especially in Geriatric patients.

So you might be asking yourself, "Is Dr. Tirado really that good of a doctor?" The answer is: YES! Without a doubt! My excellent vision today is testimony that I'm actual living, sighted proof of his skills and abilities. A word of wisdom: Finding and excellent doctor is better than finding pure gold to me, the preservation of the precious and irreplaceable gift of my eyesight I enjoy today is no less than a God given medical miracle through the continued care, hard work and expertise of Dr. Tirado. If you care about continuing to see your family, your children and grandchildren's faces and smiles or even another sunrise don't trust just anyone. Trust a doctor who takes your vision as seriously as you do. Trust Dr. Tirado!"      -M.Anderson

"I like this therapy because I don't have to wear my glasses and it's also fun to take them out with the mini-plunger. I LOVE IT!!!!!! I LOVE-repeat LOVE to SEE CLEARLY WITHOUT my glasses."       - A. Lin

"My first visit to Dr. Tirado was in 1999. He is very caring and a thorough doctor. I moved from Jacksonville spring 2008, and returned spring 2013. Needless to say, there was absolutely no hesitation to return to Dr. T for my yearly eye exams."      - M. Murphy

"All the swimming in my daily lifestyle made it difficult to wear soft contact lenses. My eyes would be dry and irritated at the end of the day. After discovering CRT lenses as a possible alternative, I scheduled and appointment. I was pleased by a welcoming, friendly, and enthusiastic atmosphere. On my second visit I was issued my CRT lenses. After my first night with my lenses my vision improved 20-30%. After 10 days my vision was 20/25 compared to my normal vision of 20/350. The contacts were initially uncomfortable and foreign, but I was determined to get through this phase. Almost a month later my vision is very close to perfect and my eyes give me no problems in the pool. It's also a cool feeling to be independent of contacts and glasses during the day. Overall I'm very happy with the amazing results and eager to note that each visit is an enjoyable experience."     -R. Nodarse
